Main phase of spring planting campaign in Belarus nearing completion

MINSK, 25 May (BelTA) – The main phase of the sowing campaign in Belarus is nearing completion; first-cut grass campaign has begun, BelTA learned from the press service of the Agriculture and Food Ministry of Belarus.

As of 25 May, spring crops have been sown on an area of 2,296,000 hectares, which accounted for over 99% of the total sowing area of 2,311,000 hectares, the press service informed.

The regional breakdown looks as follows: Brest Oblast – 437,000, or 101% of the planned area; Grodno Oblast -331,000 hectares (100% of the plan); Minsk Oblast - 499,000 hectares (almost 100%); Gomel Oblast - 409,000 hectares (98%); Vitebsk Oblast - 295,000 hectares (97%); Mogilev Oblast - 325,000 hectares (95% of the plan).

Corn has been planted on 1,271,000 hectares across all regions of the country, or 99% of the plan of 1,283,000 hectares.

Buckwheat has been sown on 12,000 hectares, or 85% of the plan of 14,000 hectares. Millet has been sown on over 5,000 hectares or 64% of the planned area of 8,000 hectares.

More than 47 million tonnes of organic fertilizers have been applied for spring sowing, or 84% of the amount transported out.

Potatoes have been planted across an area of nearly 22,000 hectares in all regions of the country, or 100% of the plan. The regional breakdown is the following: Mogilev Oblast (109%). Grodno Oblast (104%), Minsk Oblast (100%), Gomel Oblast (97%), Brest Oblast (93%), Vitebsk Oblast (92%), Vegetable crops (cabbage, beetroot, carrots, etc.) have been sown on an area of 7,000 hectares, or 90% of the plan of 8,000 hectares.

First-cut grass has been harvested over an area of 144,000 hectares, which accounted for 10% of the plan of 1,407,000 hectares. Of the mown area, 63% has been removed.

Some 700,000 tonnes of haylage has been produced, accounting for nearly 5% of the 14,309,000 tonne target. Silage has been produced in the amount of 135,000 tonnes, or 1% of the plan of 20,519,000 tonnes. Grass forage has been produced in the amount of 223,000 tonnes of feed units, which was 2% of the plan of 10,131,000 tonnes.
